One of my most received comments on my Instagram (if you’re not following me already I’d love to have you! Follow me HERE!) is “omg your hair is so gorgeous!!” so I thought I would do a whole post on my hair! Also I do not have any edits at all on these photos so that you can see the true color of my hair!
I went home last week to get my hair done and I asked y’all on IG to send in your extension/hair questions so that we could answer them for you guys! If you are in the New York/Tri state area I cannot recommend Jess enough!!! I have been going to her for 6 years.. even though I live in LA… which says a lot! Her IG handle is linked HERE. If you want her to do your hair please DM her & tell her I sent you!! <3 Now on to the questions!
The most commonly asked question was what type of extensions do I get?
A: I get the Keratin Fusion individual extensions by Hair Dreams in the color Norwegian rooted blonde 18 inches. I have had many different types of extensions (clip ins, braided, micro link) and these are by far my favorite!
Q: How do you know what color/type of extension to get?
A: First you have to make an appointment for a consultation so that the hair dresser can asses your hair. If you are traveling for your extensions and it isn’t possible for a consultation before your appointment, pictures of your hair in day light will be your best option to send your hairdresser. The reason you want pictures in natural day light is because you never want to color the actual extensions so getting it to closely match your real hair is key.
Q: What are different types of extensions?
A: Tape ins, Keratin Fusion, microlink are the three types of extensions that Jess does the most often.
Q: Do extensions hurt?
A: They do not hurt BUT I will say if you are very pain sensitive, take an Advil before you go. Extensions do not hurt at all but the first night is just a little tight on your scalp. Pain level would be 1/10 for me.
Q: What type of hair extensions should I get if I have thin hair?
A: Tape in extensions are best suited for people with thinner hair. They lay the flattest. You will need to go and have them retaped every 6-7 weeks. The actual hair lasts between 2-3 tapes after the initial installation (totaling 18-21 weeks). Tape ins end up being the most expensive because of the grade of hair being used because it has to last so much longer than other extension hair, as well as service costs.
Q: What type of haircut do I get?
A: I typically just do a little dusting to get rid of the dead ends and then shape it a little bit around my face- thats all!
Q: What type of extensions are the easiest?
A: Keratin Fusion extensions are the easiest to care for because they last 3 months in the hair without having to have any maintence for them. You can wear your hair up and no one will notice. They need to be brushed with a wet brush (here) in the morning and at night to keep from tangling. The less you wash your hair the better because shampoo and conditioner wear down the keratin tip. They need to be taken out and a new set needs to be installed every 3 months. The longer you wait after the 3 months is up the worse it becomes for your hair because it will put more tension on your real hair and more chances of breakage. Jess explained it like this to me.. Think about it this way, if you’re repelling down a mountain, at the top, you are tight and secure to the rope, the more you repel down, the more tension is on the rope and more likely of snapping or breaking.
Q: Best blonde shampoo and conditioner?
A: Blondeme blonde shampoo and conditioner and Fanola purple shampoo and conditioner.
Q: What hair color/highlights do I get?
A: I just get foiled bleach highlights and I leave like a 1/2 inch out on the top (my roots) for a more shadowed/rooted blonde look.
Q: Can people ever tell you have extensions?
A: Every single time I tell someone I have extensions they are shocked!! Because my natural hair is colored so well to match the extensions that no one ever knows! Literally just yesterday I went to an event with two girls I met through IG (heyyyy) and when I told them I had extensions they said they had no idea. The only time that my extensions show are if I am wearing my hair in two french braid pig tails. The pictures below are if i just sloppily put my hair up & was standing in front of a ring light. If you zoom in or look really carefully, you can see a few of the keratin tips but it is so camouflaged that no one has ever noticed!
Q: Do extensions damage your hair?
A: “Not if they are done correctly by a professional with a certification and experience”- Jess. The least damaging hair extensions are Natural Beaded Rows which are also the most expensive but a way smaller % of people can actually get these extensions because your natural hair must be the right texture and thickness or else it will not work! Jess is certified in this technique but doesn’t do it often because of that reason.
Q: How do you wear your hair to bed?
A: I wear my hair in a loose braid to bed and in the morning I take the braid out and brush it with a wet brush and I am good to go for the day!
Q: Can you curl and straighten your hair like normal?
A: Yes! With the extensions I get I can literally do anything to them! Jess does not recommend ever coloring your hair extensions, the only thing you should do to them is tone or glaze them.
